Maryland 32 Penn 6
Wresting Falls at No. 7 Maryland, 32-6
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Penn wrestling team struggled from the start Friday night and fell to No. 7 Maryland, 32-6, at the Terrapins' Comcast Pavilion. With the loss, the Quakers fell to 2-2 in dual meets this season.
Penn's only wins came at 133, where Bryan Ortenzio earned a one-point decision over Mookie Golden, and 141 as Zack Kemmerer downed Matt Bogusz.
Several of Friday's matches were close affairs. After Penn forfeited at the 285-pound weight class, Mark Rappo was unable to defeat Maryland's James Knox at 125, falling, 7-4. Ortenzio and Kemmerer followed with their wins, cutting the Terps' lead to three points at 9-6, but that was it for the Quakers.
Jon Kohler earned a 10-3 victory over Troy Hernandez to get Maryland rolling, and it never stopped. Kyle John followed up with a major decision over Penn's Jake Hunter, 16-4, and then Gabriel Burak fell 12-7 to Josh Asper. In the night's most anticipated match, Penn's Scott Giffin -- ranked 18th this week in the Intermat national poll -- fell to No. 6 Mike Letts, 7-4, at the 174-pound weight class.
Corey Peltier earned a major decision for Maryland at 184, downing Harrison Cook, 9-0. The match concluded at 197, and Penn went with Tyler Blakely with Micah Burak not completely back from an injury suffered last weekend at Penn State. Blakely was pinned by Hudson Taylor.
Penn is off until December 29, when the Quakers travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the two-day Southern Scuffle.
